General Questions

Why do I have a high power bill?

Almost every time there is a very high power bill that cannot be exclaimed, the problem is related to the Hot Water Cylinder.

Your Hot water cylinder has an overflow and discharge pipes, sometimes this pipe can be seen above the roof or sometimes it will go directly into the drain..Try to see if there is any evidence of hot water discharge, a small amount of dripping isn’t unusual if the cylinder is heating the water, but this should only be occasional. A continuous drip or flow is money down the drain.

Unlagged pipes can waste lots of energy, also the TPR valve on the HWC itself should be lagged

If your Hot Water Cylinder is old a thermal blanket will help reduce the heat lost

Check the thermostat. This wants to be set at 60Degrees Celsius. Note Lower than this can endanger your health. The New Zealand building code requires the storage heater to be set to a minimum temperature of 60 Degrees Celcius. This is because legionella cannot survive at these temperatures

What causes low shower water pressure?

Low water pressure is an annoyingly common problem that a lot of homeowners endure. but you don’t have to.

Though there can be many reasons for the low water pressure they can be rectified.
Generally, the reason is the low hot water pressure. This may be increased by the right set of valves, upgrade of the hot water system or the wrong type of shower valve has been installed. While there’s no set reason why it happens, there is a solution to fixing it. Contact a professional who can point out the specific cause of your low water pressure and, in turn, fix it.

What could be the cause of my recent high water bills?

Check for the obvious leaks around the house, a leaking tap.
Check to see if your toilet is leaking, as a toilet leak can sometimes be tricky to detect add some food colouring into your cistern. If colour ends up in the toilet bowl without you flushing, you have a leak.

Also, check the Hot Water Cylinder for overflow from the pipe on the roof or the pipe that leads to the drain. Once you are confident that nothing in your home is leaking it is time to check your water meter.

A simple test will help confirm a leak.
Pick a time when no water will be used for at least 3 or 4 hours -overnight is a good time.
Read the water meter (write down the numbers from left to right) Then read it again after the period of not using the water.
Compare the two readings, if there is a change in the reading, then there more than likely is a leak.
